Both sources here sell shutters, so read them as installers’ advice. The Shutter Store says to mount shutters directly to the door with an outside-mount frame, and always use a 4-sided frame on French doors.

For handles and locks the frame would hit, it says to order a French door cutout, squared or rounded. Include the frame width when you measure, and keep it off the trim around the glass.

Castleberry Shutters calls hardware placement critical. It says door shutters are custom-built after an in-home measurement and commonly use narrower louvers, around 2.5 inches.

Light, privacy and cost

Hunker says closed louvers let light in while hiding the glass, so you get privacy without sitting in the dark. They cannot block all light, and the article suggests blackout curtains for rooms that must be dark.

Hunker also says shutters cost more than curtains and blinds, and that professional installation often adds a lot to the price. None of the sources gave dollar figures, so get a quote.

On a bedroom door I would pair the shutters with a blackout curtain on a rod above. On a kitchen or living room door the shutters alone usually do the job.
